The Calvin Law Professionals of Michigan invite you to our next gathering. James Vanden Bosch, Professor of English Emeritus, will be our speaker.

5:30 p.m. Networking and social time
6 p.m. Presentation and questions with James Vanden Bosch
About the presentation
Last year, James Vanden Bosch, Professor of English Emeritus, introduced the Law Professionals alumni group to the project he’s currently engaged with—the meaning and import of the absolute phrase that introduces the Second Amendment of the US Constitution: “A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” He noted that this particular absolute phrase, with an S—LV (incomplete)—SC structure, is quite rare today, and that this fact may account for some of the difficulty we in the 21st century have when we try to establish the possible meanings and grammatical functions of such a phrase.
This year he plans to address two further elements of this project: 1) the gradual but steady decline of that particular absolute structure since the late 18th century, and 2) the various grammatical and semantic meanings of such a phrase in relationship to the clause that it modifies. He will also briefly describe the “canonical” approach to this relationship used by Justice Scalia in Heller v. District of Columbia (2008) and note a problem or two with that approach.

Membership
When you register for this event, you may also choose to become a sponsoring member of CLPM. We are looking for $50 annual contributing memberships to assist the CLPM in sponsoring events, inviting speakers and hosting pre-law students. Memberships are valid throughout Calvin's fiscal year, July 1st – June 30th, 2019.
CLPM memberships enable Calvin to sponsor three events each year, provide a directory of CLPM members (to contributors); send regular updates on Calvin's Pre-Law program; and explore opportunities to support the Calvin Pre-Law program.
