Is it possible to know why Putin decided to attack Ukraine in February 2022 and what he is hoping to achieve? Can Ukraine survive this attack from its much larger northern neighbor? And how should followers of Jesus understand the dynamics of this war and what should our response be?
Join us for a talk by Russian history specialist and visiting scholar Dr. John Bernbaum.
About the speaker
Dr. John Bernbaum has recently returned to his alma mater, joining the Paul Henry Institute for the Study of Christianity and Politics as a Senior Fellow for the 2022-23 academic year. His focus will be on completing several books and teaching as opportunities open up in the daytime program and CALL (Calvin Academy for Lifelong Learners). His most recent book, Opening the Red Door: The Inside Story of Russia's First Christian Liberal Arts University (IVP Academic, 2019), reflects his long career in Christian higher education and Russia.
A Calvin history alum, Dr. Bernbaum completed his Ph.D. in European and Russian history at the University of Maryland. He went on to spend four years at the U.S. Department of State (1972-1976). He now serves as President of BEAM (Business and Education as Mission), Inc., a private foundation that supports educational programs in Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia. He previously served as President of the Russian-American Christian University in Moscow (1995–2014) and as Director of the American Studies Program and Executive Vice President of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (1976–1995).
