The Math and Statistics Department Welcomes Colloquium Speaker Dr. Alana Unfried
Dr. Alana Unfried, Assistant Professor Statistics at California State University, will speak on September 24 at 3:40 pm in North Hall 276. Join us to hear her speak on "Women and People of Color in STEM."
National demand for workers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is on the rise. Many high school and post-secondary students, however, diverge from STEM pathways into other fields. Therefore, a deeper understanding of STEM career pathways is needed, starting at early ages. I will discuss my work on examining the relationships between pre-college student attitudes toward STEM subjects and interest in STEM careers, as well as the role of gender, age, and race/ethnicity. This includes the development of two survey instruments, and use of statistical methods such as factor analysis, missing data analysis, cluster analysis, and variable selection for analysis of survey results.
Alana Unfried is an Assistant Professor of Statistics at California State University, Monterey Bay. She completed her PhD in Statistics at North Carolina State University in 2016. Her research interests focus on statistics education, including statistical service learning, co-requisite courses to support introductory statistics students, and the development and validation of instruments assessing attitudes towards statistics. She also enjoys consulting work and collaborating with STEM and education faculty on evaluating K-12 student attitudes toward STEM. She currently serves as Past-Chair of the Mathematical Association of America’s Special Interest Group on Statistics Education.
