Sara Nutley Mathematics Major Calvin College
The Boston University SIBS Program explores the combination of statistics and health sciences to demonstrate how mathematical methods can be used to understand various health problems and their causes. Using statistical software and research data from notable projects such as The Framingham Heart Study, participants spend the summer creating and testing hypotheses focused on measuring the significance of the relationship between human behaviors and various health conditions. Students interact daily with practicing biostatisticians, epidemiologists, clinicians, and geneticists to better understand current projects focused on topics such as cardiovascular health, obesity, and food safety. Students finish the program by working in teams to prepare a short project in which they create a hypothesis and measure the statistical significance of the event occurring.
