Mathematics & Statistics Colloquium: Topology, Data, and the Bridge Between
The Mathematics & Statistics and Computer Science Departments welcome you to a colloquium by Dr. Amish Mishra from Florida Atlantic University. Join us at 3:00 in SB 110 for light refreshments and a lecture at 3:10.
Title: Topology, Data, and the Bridge Between
Abstract: The collection and analysis of data has offered insights into human behavior, cybersecurity, computational sciences, and myriads more domains. Thus, it has served fruitful to develop new tools for analyzing data: tools that extract meaningful features from data, reduce the dimensionality of data, and train better predictive models. A burgeoning field of work called Topological Data Analysis (TDA) has answered the call by analyzing the structure of data using topological invariants. TDA is often used for dimensionality reduction in machine learning pipelines and has found many computational implementations due to its advantageous linear algebraic formulations. This talk gives an overview of the necessary background in topology and algebra that lead into surprising usage in data analysis. The latter portion of the talk covers the speaker's recent research in persistent homology and applications in a data science pipeline.
