American Physiological Society Summer Research Programs

APS is proud to offer five programs that allow undergraduate students to participate in research during the summer. Recipients of the Society’s five summer fellowship programs spend an average of 10 weeks in the laboratory of an established scientist and APS member. Each program recruits undergraduate students nationwide (worldwide for the Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship and the Undergraduate Research Excellence Fellowship), and some are geared toward providing research experiences to a wide range of students—including those from disadvantaged backgrounds and from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and students with disabilities—to work with APS member-researchers in a specific area of physiological research. Participants are selected based on academic merit, the quality of the proposed experience and the availability of appropriate faculty mentors. Each Fellow receives a stipend plus additional funds for travel to present his or her research at a scientific meeting. Research hosts receive funds for student lab supplies. Fellows participate in hands-on research and learn to develop a hypothesis, design and troubleshoot experiments, collect and analyze data, and write and present results.

The five APS Undergraduate summer research programs fund up to 86 full-time undergraduate students to work for 8-10 weeks during the summer in a physiology laboratory. Each student has his/her own research question to work on during the summer. The intent of all these programs is to excite and encourage students to pursue a career as a basic research scientist. In addition, Fellows receive travel funds to attend and present their research data at either a meeting at NIH or the following year's APS annual meeting (Experimental Biology), which is a broad-based scientific meeting of five to seven diverse biological scientific societies. There are many opportunities for students to meet other undergraduate students, network with graduate students and researchers, and attend scientific presentations and posters.

Compensation

?$4,000 summer stipend to the student (10 weeks support, paid directly to the student) ?up to $1,300 travel award/reimbursement to the student for attending (and presenting their data if applicable) at the APS annual meeting (Experimental Biology) or an APS Fall Conference
