The Summer Medical and Research Training Program is for undergraduate students who are interested in exploring a career in scientific research. They encourage Ph.D. oriented candidates to apply. Up to 100 students are recruited for the SMART Program from across the nation. They offer nine paid weeks of biomedical related research in a broad range of areas.
The Summer Medical and Research Training (SMART) Program was developed to provide frontier-level, biomedical summer research projects for undergraduates in a supportive environment with supplemental educational activities.
The program offers:
- Nine paid weeks of biomedically related research in a broad range of areas
- Daily seminars designed for undergraduates
- Free SMART GRE prep workshops
- Career development activities
- Housing at Rice University dorms
The SMART program includes a unique daily seminar series created just for program participants, evening movies or talks by patients that provide a "human face" to the cutting edge science you learn in the seminar series. Career development events, like the exciting "Graduate School Night," help you learn about career options and make connections with others who have faced the decisions that you are considering.
SMART welcomes students from all science and math majors, and even non-science majors with appropriate background and interest. Projects span the spectrum of biomedical science, including projects in bioengineering and computational biology.
Compensation
Participants are compensated approximately $4,500 (before taxes) for nine weeks. The compensation may be all salary or a mixture of salary, housing, transportation allowance depending on funding source.
