Student Conservation Association

Several Calvin students have participated in Student Conservation Association internships which place interns in national parks, wildlife refuges, etc. These internships may be research or work experiences and range from field research to construction/maintenance or interpretive work. SCA internships are open to students at all educational levels.

From archaeology to zoology, SCA members work in a range of different disciplines. Whether your dream is to be a ranger patrolling the backcountry or an environmental educator leading field trips, a biologist monitoring wildlife or an urban planner working to engage local communities, your career can start with SCA.

Most SCA members focus their service in one of the following areas: recreation management, visitor services and site operations, wildlife management, natural resources management, cultural and historical resource management, backcountry and trail work, geographic information systems (GIS/GPS), sustainability or education and interpretation.

Compensation

SCA internships are expense-paid. They provide a variety of allowances or grants designed to help offset the costs associated with traveling to and staying at the site of the internship. Typical positions include a one-time travel allowance and weekly living allowance. Many positions also include some sort of housing or housing stipend. Many positions are also eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award at the end of service.

Apply

To apply to SCA's programs, you must be 18 years or older and have a high school diploma or GED. You can apply if you are a recent high school graduate, a college student, a graduate student, or a college graduate. You do not need to be currently in college or affiliated with a school in any way.

All skill sets and backgrounds are welcome. The program has seen art history, international relations, business, math, marketing, history and english majors along with natural resources, recreation and environmental majors. Qualifications vary by position, but most SCA positions do not require a specific major or degree.
