Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Undergraduate Programs and Summer Fellowships

The American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) Summer Student Fellowship program brings bright, talented students to Woods Hole to learn more about ocean science, attend lectures by Woods Hole scientists, and conduct independent research working alongside world-class scientists.

A research project is at the heart of the Summer Student Fellowship program. All Fellows are expected to work on a project selected in collaboration with their sponsor(s) that will provide meaningful results in one summer's work. Project topics span the vast spectrum of research in ocean sciences and engineering conducted in WHOI's science departments and the Woods Hole Field Station of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Fellowship recipients have the opportunity attend and participate in a busy schedule of talks, seminars and a hands-on, one-day, ocean sampling cruise on-board the R/V Tioga focusing on data collection and sampling methods with advanced oceanographic technology and instruments. The cruise is especially designed for Fellows and not only provides practical training but also brings the group together socially through a shared field experience.

Fellows also have many occasions to interact with current MIT/WHOI Joint Program graduate students, from the Q&A session designed specifically for that purpose to the Ethics in Science Workshop.

All Summer Student Fellows are expected to present a mid-summer progress report. At the end of the summer, each Summer Fellow is required to prepare a written report describing his or her research. Summer Student Fellows are also required to make a public oral presentation of his or her results. All Fellows are required to attend the Summer Lecture Series as well as the Ethics in Science Workshop. In addition, Fellows are encouraged to participate in the busy summer schedule of seminars and colloquia in the Woods Hole scientific community, which provides an excellent introduction to the many facets of marine science.

Compensation

Summer Student Fellowship awards for the summer of 2015 carry a stipend of $562.50 per week. Fellowship awards include institution housing. Additional support is offered to help offset the cost of round-trip travel to Woods Hole. The 2015 travel allowance is $600.

Summer Student Fellowships are awarded to undergraduate students who will have completed their junior year at colleges or universities by the start of the fellowship period. Preference is given to students studying in any of the fields of science or engineering including but not limited to the fields of biology, chemistry, engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics, meteorology, physics, oceanography, and marine policy. Persons from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

In addition to the formal application form, applicants must submit a CV, research statement, official transcripts, a completed Course Record worksheet, and three references.
