Intramural Wiffle Ball (Coed)

Basic information

Rules and policies applying to intramural wiffleball (coed) teams and players.

Players

Team is made up of 6 players. The sixth player is designated as a short fielder and normally is positioned between infielders and outfielders.

Equipment

WIFFLE bats and WIFFLE balls will be used and provided by the supervisor. No gloves may be used for the fielders.

Playing Field

Home plate will be at the SE corner of the gym using the white volleyball lines as the foul lines. Bases will be 40 feet apart. First base will be located on the basketball half line at the volleyball endline extended. Second base will be located on the basketball half line and the opposite 10 foot line of the volleyball court extended. Third base will be located on the volleyball sideline and 10 foot line on the opposite side of the court from home plate (40 feet).

Length of game

Games will be scheduled for 50 minutes or will consist of seven innings, whichever comes first. The last inning must begin before the 40th minute to ensure the completion of the inning.

Pitching

Pitchers will pitch to their own team. Pitches are allowed to be underhand or overhand at any speed. Pitchers may not field a ball while pitching. If they interfere with a hit ball or a play, either intentionally or unintentionally, the batter is automatically out. The pitcher must wait to pitch until the outfield is ready. If he/she pitches before they are ready (intentionally) the batter is out; otherwise, replay the pitch. When it is the pitcher’s turn to bat he/she must be replaced by another pitcher. When he/she has scored or is out, he/she can resume his/her pitching position.

Batting

There will be no balls, walks, or called strikes. Batters may strike out swinging. Base runners may not advance on illegal pitches. Each batter gets 4 pitches to hit which means 4 strikes and you’re out or 4 foul balls and you’re out. Bunting is not permitted. An intentional bunt will result in a dead ball and the player being called out.

Runner/Ball contact

Base runners in contact with a base that are hit with a batted or thrown ball will be safe. Base runners in between bases will be out. Fielders may throw the ball at runners. Runners hit below the neck will be called out. No malicious acts allowed (ie, with the intention of injury) and will result in removal from the game.

Foul Balls

Foul balls may be played off the wall and caught for outs. The ball is still considered foul if it hits the wall in foul territory and then lands in bounds.

Rafters/lights

Balls caught off of the lights and the side netting will be an out, but it will not be an out if caught off of the back net.

Base running

Stealing bases is not permitted. Base runners cannot leave their base until the pitched ball has reached home plate.

Coed Modifications

A team consists of 6 on the field, 4 men and 2 women. However, teams are permitted to compete with as few as 4 players as long as the minimum number of men and/or women is 1 and the maximum number of men and/or women is 4. Combinations may include
