HIST 380/233: Field Work in Archaeology: Modern Middle East

4-week Middle East Study Tour, offering courses in archaeological fieldwork and the history of the modern Middle East.

3½ weeks will be spent in Jordan, primarily at Umm Al-Jimal with overnight weekend tours to historical, cultural, religious, and natural heritage sites across the country. The course ends with a 3–4-day excursion to Jerusalem and Bethlehem/Ramallah in the West Bank of Palestine. The program is open to visitors and students for 0, 4, or 8 academic credits with two 4-credit courses delivered during the travel experience (plus an additional 2 weeks of online learning for HIST 233 “Modern Middle East” students). All participants will take part in an archaeological excavation (extra responsibilities for IDIS 340/HIST 380 “Field Work in Archaeology” students) at the site of Umm Al-Jimal, recently nominated to be Jordan’s next UNESCO World Heritage Site; UNESCO’s decision is expected to be announced near the end of the travel experience and Calvin’s President will be present.
