IDIS W32 The Leadership Code
Basic information
- Dates: January 3-23
- Cost: $2,210 (estimate)
This interim gives students opportunities to develop and practice advanced skills in Christian servant leadership in an athletics context. Students will interact with experts in leadership in fields ranging from team management and organizational health, to leadership in high-performance sports and incarnational leadership.
The course is organized around units that pair learning from experts with hands-on activities. For each unit, students start with a session with a leadership expert, and write reflections on their experience. After the learning session, students participate in a number of Amazing Race-style competitions in which they apply their new knowledge directly. Over the course of interim, each student will be the captain of a small group of peers and lead them through Amazing Race challenges. Captains will write a self-evaluation and receive evaluative feedback from the members of their team. The capstone event of the interim is a 3-day high school athletic summit, modeled on the Gainey Leadership Retreat, for high school athletes in San Diego. The summit will be led by the interim course instructors, and Calvin students will be responsible for planning the retreat and assisting the instructors by leading small groups of high school students in discussions, role-playing activities, and Amazing Race activities. At the end of the interim, students will write a paper about their beliefs about leadership as they’ve changed over the course of the class. Because the interim builds on the Gainey Leadership Retreat, previous experience with the retreat is strongly encouraged but not required. Other student-athletes who want to become better servant leadership are welcome. The course takes place in San Diego, San Francisco, and Arizona. The $2200 course fee covers travel, food, lodging, and honorarium fees for guest speakers. Students will stay with host families for part of the trip.
