Perspectives in Psychology–Cross-cultural Leadership: Lessons from Pioneers in Psychology and Religious Reformers

This course explores leadership in cross-cultural contexts by studying the profound influence of early psychologists and religious reformers on work, family, and culture.

This European, multi-discipline course will involve investigation of sites and museums related to individuals who created and contributed to the fields of experimental, organizational, clinical, and cognitive psychology. We will also investigate the influence and leadership of the Church Reformers in four European countries. The best way to understand these famous scientists and reformers and their contributions to psychology, religion and leadership is to see where they lived, breathed and worked, thereby permitting a greater appreciation of how their culture and contexts shaped their viewpoints, theories and practice. Through this experience, we expect our students to articulate the central contributions of each psychologist and reformer studied, but more importantly, understand how the cultural and historical context shaped these theoretical perspectives and what that means for a student of psychology, business, and religion today. Furthermore, we hope our students will develop cultural agility which will allow them to understand when to integrate culturally diverse norms, practices, or perspectives. Understanding and adapting to these cultural differences can be crucial for leadership, organizational effectiveness, and success. Prerequisite: PSYC 151 or permission of the instructor. This course will satisfy an elective in psychology and will be part of the proposed global designation in the school of business.

As a demonstration of its strong commitment to global connections and off-campus studies, Calvin has recently made the welcome decision to recalculate the fees for summer 2022 off-campus programs. The cost of tuition can now be applied to the direct costs of the program. As a result, the PSYC 322 May Europe program, which was priced at a $5025 (including tuition price), will now cost $3950 (including tuition price), resulting in a savings to each student of $1075. 

We are pleased to be able to make our program more affordable to more students and hope that each participant will be able to live wholeheartedly as Christ’s agent of renewal in this new place in the world!
