Calvin has a lot of excellent professors, as Maydi Hernandez '18 can attest. But it wasn't just in class that this business major found ways to connect, learn, and grow on campus.
How were faith, leadership and ethics practices woven into your courses? How did those elements prepare you for life, regardless of where you work?
Faith, leadership and ethics practices were woven into my courses by continual reminders of the importance of being good stewards and using our work in a way that contributes to the kingdom of God. In doing so, we can love those around us and use the talents God has given us to benefits his creation for his glory! This has taught me to live virtuously and in a way that pleases God.
What’s one thing you would want to tell someone starting their journey at Calvin?
Take time to talk to your professors. Really learn to appreciate your professors and get to know them. They have a lot to share, and they love getting to know you.
How has your faith grown at Calvin?
My faith has grown a lot at Calvin mainly because there are many ways to get plugged in: Bible study, chapel, worship nights, LOFT, and many more—all things that have allowed me to actively seek God in community.
What’s one thing that surprised you about Calvin?
How many student organizations you could be involved in! There are many great things to do at Calvin that contribute to your formation and development, and that go hand in hand with your majors and interests.
What is your favorite space on campus, and why?
My favorite space on campus is the library (main floor) because there's a nice balance of socializing and studying— it's neither too distracting nor too quiet.
