Professors are a key part of the Calvin experience recalls Gretchen. “I could sing the praises of the professors at Calvin all day long. So many of them walked alongside me as I asked questions about career direction or how the Christian worldview fits into a corporate context. When professors say that their doors are always open, they mean it.”
What one thing would you tell someone starting their journey here?
Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Whether that’s studying abroad, taking a class outside your major, or sitting with someone random in the dining hall, there are so many ways to grow, and it typically starts with one bold “Yes!”
How did your faith grow at Calvin?
I chose to get involved at a local church and seek out mentors who guided me toward truth. I asked a lot of questions and found Calvin to be a place that supported me in seasons of doubt and in seasons of clarity. Overall, I became rooted and grounded in the Gospel due to a multitude of people and experiences that came from being a part of the Calvin community.
What is your favorite space on campus, and why?
One of my favorite places is the main floor of the library by Peet’s. I love that it’s a gathering space for students and visitors – so there’s always someone new to chat with.
How did Calvin prepare you for your current career?
Calvin gave me the tools to think strategically, with a long-term focus, then narrow down to work out the details. This came through completing multiple semester-long projects, the speakers and professors who offered wisdom from their experience, and the variety of courses that you take as a student. The ability to take a project from dream to reality and handle everything in between was something that I got to practice from day one at Calvin.
