Chili Cookoff
Academics / Departments & Programs / Chemistry & Biochemistry / Student Experience / Community Events / Chili Cook-Off
Join the annual chili cook-off for a chance to relax and enjoy being with the chemistry and biochemistry community. Watch the rivalry continue as faculty members perfect their secret chili recipes in competition for the Chili Bowl. The trophy winner commits to displaying the bowl in their office until the next year—with extra candy always available for students and faculty.
Take on the challenge of eating a habanero pepper to join the Habanero Club and find your reward in washing it down with ice cream afterwards. Why not a glass of water to cool down? The active ingredient in a habanero is capsaicin, which is not water-soluble, so water actually spreads it and enhances the effects. However, the fat in the ice cream binds to capsaicin and dissolves it, counter-acting the effects of this spicy ingredient.
The Chili Bowl
A competitive rivalry begins to cook every February as faculty concoct and perfect their favorite chili recipe in hopes of winning the coveted Chili Bowl. (It's about way more than just the bowl!)
The trophy winner commits to display the bowl in their office for an entire year, filled with a surplus of candy and easy access for students and faculty to participate in the takings.
