How to apply for scholarships

The application forms for named scholarships are available every year beginning December 1 and must be submitted by January 31. All students who will be enrolled next academic year are encouraged to apply (including newly admitted students and international students). Complete one scholarship application, and you will be automatically considered for all scholarships that match your eligibility.

Thanks to generous contributions from the Dutch International Society, Calvin offers a variety of scholarships to students interested in learning Dutch. Scholarships are available to students studying at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

Other awards

The Ten Hoor Prize (ranging from $100-$300) was established several decades ago by the Ten Hoor family to recognize a Calvin University student for his or her special contribution to the study of Dutch culture and/or the learning of the Dutch language.

To enter this competition for current Calvin students, you must submit an essay on a topic related to the Dutch language or culture. The deadline for the 2020-2021 academic year is April 20, 2021.

The details

The Ten Hoor Prize will be awarded to the student who submits the best essay on the language and/or culture of the Netherlands. Cultural topics may range broadly from Dutch history, politics, art, society, economics, to related interdisciplinary fields.

The paper should be prepared for “blind review”: Use a detachable title page with the author’s name and e-mail address on it but do not identify the author in the body of the paper. Please deliver the paper to the Dutch department office, Hiemenga Hall 427. Papers may be prior submissions for courses, reworkings of such papers, or specially written for the competition. Brief papers are acceptable. Only one paper per student. Only undergraduate submissions allowed.

The winning paper will be chosen by a panel of members from the Dutch program of the Department of Germanic & Asian Languages. The department reserves the right to make no award if the submissions are not of sufficiently high quality.
