Awards & Prizes

De Bie Essay Prize

The historical studies department also awards a John De Bie Essay Prize each year for the best history paper. You do not have to be a history major to enter. The paper can be on any topic related to history, and essays written for Calvin courses are welcome. The 2023 award was $100.

To apply, submit a copy of your essay (with your name removed from all pages) via email to history@calvin.edu, along with a cover sheet. If you are unable to print and scan the cover sheet, you can simply include this information in the body of your email:

  • Your name
  • Your Calvin email
  • Your student number
  • Your mailing address
  • Title of essay submitted
  • Is your essay the product of work for a class? (Yes/No) If Yes, which class, term, and instructor?

Remember, you must remove your name from all pages of your essay, including the headers. Submissions for the 2024 prize are due (by email) on Sunday, April 14 at 11:59 PM.

Hoekstra Senior Prize

The historical studies department also awards a Peter D. Hoekstra Senior Prize to a graduating senior each year. One prize of $750 was awarded in 2023. The department faculty chooses recipients for this prize, so there is no application.
