Department of Nursing Goal
The goal of the department is to prepare entry-level professional nurses with a core body of knowledge, competencies, and abilities germane to nursing, and a commitment to lifelong Christian service. Students will be prepared to assume entry-level positions as professional nurses and/or pursue graduate education.
Knowledge
At the conclusion of the curriculum, the student will be able to:
- Formulate a philosophy of nursing based upon a Reformed Christian worldview.
- Analyze the varying health promotion and primary, secondary, and tertiary health protection needs presented by diverse individuals across the lifespan, their families, and their communities including systems that impact health.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of community-based nursing as a method of health care delivery.
- Integrate evidence from research into nursing practice.
Competencies and abilities
At the conclusion of the curriculum, the student will be able to:
- Integrate skills in assessment, critical thinking, clinical judgment, nursing process, and ethical decision-making into the provision of nursing care.
- Communicate effectively in partnerships with diverse individuals, families, communities, and collaborative relationships with other health care professionals.
- Use informatics, technical skills, and health care technology proficiently in the care of diverse individuals, families, and communities.
- Assume the multifaceted roles of the professional nurse including change agent; provider/designer/manager/coordinator of safe, quality care; and member of the profession.
Commitments
At the conclusion of the curriculum, the student will be able to:
- Internalize the core virtues (An Engagement with God’s World: The Core Curriculum of Calvin University) into the practice of Reformed Christian professional nursing.
- Formulate a personal plan for ongoing learning for the purpose of lifelong Christian service to the human community within the discipline of nursing.
