QUICK LINKS
Services we offer
- ADHD
Calvin’s Health Services is able to manage the medication treatment for students with ADHD. To expedite the transfer of care to one of our physicians, it is important to have all of the student’s medical records transferred to our office prior to that first appointment. To expedite the transfer of care to one of our physicians, it is important to have all of the student’s medical records transferred to our office prior to that first appointment. Transitioning to higher education can be challenging and our clinicians are experts in caring for ADHD in the university setting. When necessary, our physicians can work in collaboration with the Center for Academic Success, Disability Services, and Center for Counseling and Wellness. - ALLERGY SHOTS
For allergy injections, the first injection must be given in the allergist office. Students are recommended to bring their allergy serum to Health Services along with detailed instructions and allergy injection schedules signed by their allergy care provider. The serum may be stored at Health Services. Moreover, a university physician must be present when injections are administered, so appointments are required. Students are strongly encouraged to contact their insurance provider to verify that services are covered under their plan. Please click here for more information.
- IMMUNIZATIONS
All students coming to Calvin University are required to meet immunization criteria. Health Services staff follow CDC guidelines to promote the health of the entire student body. Faculty and staff may also use Health Services for travel immunizations, and the yearly influenza vaccine. Please click here for more information.
- LABORATORY
Office based laboratory tests may be done in the course of an office visit. For students who need additional laboratory tests, samples are often collected in Health Services and Spectrum Health Laboratory couriers collect these specimens multiple times per day. Our office serves as a regional reference laboratory collection site for the convenience of our students but the charges for any specimens delivered to Spectrum Laboratory will be charged by Spectrum according to the student's insurance coverage (the only exception is for students on the student health plan. All Spectrum labs and in-house labs are covered by the student health plan).
To schedule a laboratory test, students can call Health Services or visit one of the following laboratory sites:

Health Services providers are experienced in mental health concerns and have a variety of openings throughout the week for visits of this type of concern. Your care is confidential here. There are times where we may work closely with your other providers (for example, a counselor on or off campus) with your permission and signed release. When urgent psychiatric care is needed, we typically refer to the Pine Rest urgent care center locally.
- NUTRITION AND HEALTH EATING
We have a registered dietician with 35 years of experience available for scheduled dietary consultations. She provides counseling for those on special diets, athletes looking for nutritional guidance for peak performance, or for those with any questions about healthy eating or disordered eating.
- PHYSICAL EXAMS
Comprehensive yearly physical exams as well as brief exams for employment or volunteer opportunities can be scheduled through Health Services. Athletic physicals are scheduled through the athletic training office. For more information about athletic physicals, please visit the Sports Medicine Department website.
- SEXUAL ASSAULT, STD DIAGNOSIS, AND TREATMENT
We provide confidential evaluation and treatment for concerns relating to sexually transmitted infections of any person of any gender. In the case of sexual assault that has happened in the last 3 days, we recommend starting your care with the local YWCA as a certified sexual assault nurse examiner is available 24 hours a day to provide an initial medical forensic exam. We recommend then having follow-up care with our office for further treatment and care.
- SPORTS MEDICINE
Health Services providers can assess and treat a variety of musculoskeletal concerns. Dr. Edwin Kornoelje, sports medicine physician and former Calvin team physician, is also available 2 Thursday afternoons a month during the school year for evaluation of musculoskeletal injuries and rehabilitation. He is also available for appointments at his private office.
